This Summer's Deluge

Well, that was summer ending with a vengance! Here's a rainfall trace for Monday 23rd September. At the time I took this picture it was still raining heavily and the daily total ended up well over 2". The actual instrument is an Electrical Rainfall Recorder by Casella from the late 1950s. The rain receiver works on the tipping bucket method as shown in the extract from Casella's 1959 trade catalogue. This is a lovely set of instruments, developed initially for water authorities, research stations and the recorder unit came with a utility hardwood case with carry handle. This example, with bevelled glass, lift of lid, chart drawer to the base and polished mahogany case was designed for public display alongside the Casella barograph with a matching case. This a very rare set of instruments and the pair will shortly appear on my website.

Just to prove that barometric pressure was involved in the deluge of the 23rd you can see the trace plunging down the chart.
